The community, also features shopping, dining and excellent schools and healthcare facilities, and was recently voted "Best Neighborhood" by the readers of Sarasota Magazine.
For nearly a century, Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (SMR), the parent company of the developer of Lakewood Ranch, has been committed to the protection and preservation of the land within its care. From turf and tree farming to ranching, agriculture and community development, SMR's treatment of the land and environment has been a continuing expression of the most careful stewardship.
This heritage of environmental responsibility has led to Lakewood Ranch’s being designated a Green Community by the Florida Green Building Coalition. Lakewood Ranch is the largest master-planned community in the country to achieve this important designation. Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club's membership in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses is another important example of the commitment to the environment.
History
In the early 1900s, John Schroeder of Milwaukee, an owner of furniture, turpentine, milling and lumber businesses, began assembling the beautiful land, rich in natural resources, that is, today, Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (SMR).
In 1922, the Uihlein family, founders of Schlitz Brewing Company, acquired the land and continued to expand the agricultural operations still active today, which include cattle ranching, vegetable, citrus, timber, and turf farming as well as shell mining.
In 1994, after years of planning and approvals, real estate development began with the introduction of Lakewood Ranch. The stewardship of a great American family, a history of successful land management and a strong financial plan make Lakewood Ranch a sound investment and a great place to live.
